Well this would explain the problem then. You're forcing a strange refresh rate and the game is trying to sync to that but windows is falling back to 60 but the game hasn't been informed of the change? Maybe I should try forcing to 60 even if the refresh rate is higher? David In order to test then you would have to make a custom monitor driver. If your display does not report the custom hz you have configured then it will not use it for full screen. It has to be reported by the displays driver. Sucks I know but google custom hz settings for games not being applied and be aggravated. What happens in windowed mode? David

I'm just trying to narrow down the problem. I'm not sure if it's a direct 3D issue because I've been reading up and I've found a few things relating to this that seem to suggest this. However, there may be work arounds for these kinda things. But because your setup is quite odd it's hard to figure out what part of your setup is causing the problem. We need to isolate the cause then I can look into fixing it. It just seems odd to me that with v-sync off it still happens. That's what's throwing me off right now as that don't make any sense to me. David The resolution you tested this on supports 70hz without you making a custom resolution? If so then that makes me wonder to but being Nvidia/ATI is the biggest difference then I would say Nvidia drivers or maybe my settings in the Nvidia Control panel for Phase Shift.

David I tested windowed mode earlier and it was still there. The only times the game was perfect was when the fps was capped at 60 inbetween fluctuations in the limiter or when I connected my older monitor to the system which it ran 60hz default so the game was ok on it.

Is there something in the log file that will show what the game thinks the refresh rate is?

i can not reproduce this issue on my system, i've added a 720p mode at 70hz and it runs normally (vsync on and off) Games will not use the custom hz setting. This is known and the screen will fall back to driver recommended hz settings. This hasn't been possible since Windows XP so I suppose if you are using XP then maybe you can run a fullscreen 3d app with custom hz setting. my display osd directly confirms it is actually running at 70hz while the game is running

actually it does, as its narrowing things down, looking in the wrong place for problems doesn't help
right now we can't even confirm its a game issue as all we know is you have a non standard setup and your the one with the issues, and the leading point you had, running at 70hz has shown to not be a specific cause of issues, based on current information it puts us back to its more likely a system configuration issue and thats all we can go on until you provide some more useful information

David David, are you still available for help after10 years? Got sudden stutters after the game has been working wel for me for over 4 years Had no setup change, maybe only a windows update
