well just a minute ago, I thought of an idea.. would it be hard to have PS look at all the midi files in the game, and say, shade out the instruments that don't exist in the diffculties info at the top?

to expand upon this...When I do songs.. and I have song with no diff_**** = numbers...could I put like = NA...and then in the game..it will instead of having non glowing orbs..but X's or ---NA---..to show its not available. Also.. I add diff_band =...but its not in the list.

We were pushing a tag in the difficulties but I this would have messed up FOF. But I'm happy to go with diff_guitar = -1 which would keep the value an integer.
We do support the diff_band tag, but the default theme doesn't display it. However, it is currently used when sorting the list by difficulty.

If non-existing tracks aren't grayed out during song selection, should EOF start writing the diff_... = -1 tags for all empty instrument tracks? Up to now, I know the following difficulty tags have been established: diff_guitar diff_bass diff_drums diff_vocals diff_keys diff_bass_real diff_guitar_real diff_bass_real_22 diff_guitar_real_22 diff_keys_real
However I don't recall there having been tags finalized for the few remaining tracks: PART GUITAR COOP PART RHYTHM PART DANCE

I wouldn't bother differentiating between 17 and 22 frets as they would be the same values anyway. Adding Coop and Rhythm should be fine though. Thanks David

How do these tags sound: diff_guitar_coop diff_rhythm
I agree with asskickulater that it would be good for Phase Shift to be able to check the MIDI to see which parts are present, but I suggest that if song.ini has any difficulty tags, Phase Shift can skip that parse and assume that the difficulty tags present are exhaustive (all tracks either have a difficulty defined or are defined as vacant with a difficulty of -1). This will have the benefit for improving performance for charts that have the complete information, and having a fall back method that will work for older charts.
