as this subject of open hopos come up i thought there may as well be a post covering it
first impression the idea of the open hopo seems like a poorly implimented feature, feel free point out something i may have overlooked but this is my take on the situation
the open note is a strum without holding anything, the idea of the hopo is it can be hit without struming so these are completely conflicting ideas, the open hopo is basically becomes a completely new situation saying do nothing, but the flaw with this is you can sucessfully hit this note while screwing up because you were doing nothing anyway, and not because you went out of your way to do so
the justification behind the open hopo use seems to be for when you want to represent a pull off / release, so to me the better ways to chart this you should be able to represent forced directional hopos where needed
so here i am thinking of something comparable to dj heros scratching system where a you would have 3 types of hopo, a general hopo that can be hit any way, or an option to state specifically if this hopo is hammer on, or a release, maybe represented with up / down arrows on the note, and if it is stated then it must be played in this mannor to hit
this then promotes more accurate charting and use of skill, the players can attempt to play songs closer to how they are supposed to be played, this could potentially work as an expert+ guitar mode, in normal modes all forced directional hopos are just normal to maintain backwards compatibility
to me this sounds like a better system in every way, meets all criteria that the open note is attempting to accomplish but actually improves how songs are charted and played and is completely optional so doesn't break anything
