So I made a video background for Phase Shift (not for a certain song) but it won't play for some reason. All I see is a black screen. I have it in the right folder and it's a .avi file. Does someone know what I should do to fix this?
Edit: I've realized it's something to do with the codec or something like that. Can someone give me tips on how to encode it correctly?

The first one isn't a virus. You can get around that, but I understand being cautious. Trusting random people online isn't a good first step. As for the other one, you just install it. There's nothing more to it. Might have to restart Windows.

What OS, and what version do you have? forgive me for being an idiot, but what does OS mean. And are you asking for the version of the CCCP?

Wow... OK then.
This would be an excellent time to berate you for not knowing these basic things, but this is a place of learning. And I have that signature for a reason. Even when trying to help, people say I come off hard.
OS is your operating system. Windows, Mac, and Linux are your most popular. And the version is what version those are. Such as mine: Windows 7 SP1, 64-bit.

I'm thinking you might've encoded the video incorrectly. But what do I know? I'm just some random guy on the internet. I suggest learning a bit on how codecs work, what the differences are between them, and learning how to identify codecs video files use. From there, analyze the provided background video files the game has, and encode your videos in a way similar to those provided files. Pro tip: also might have something to do with an .ini file for the song. Be sure to read through the documentation in the Readme! dwsk.co.uk/index_phase_shift.html

Then I can't help you. I don't do Windows 10. Contact me when you have Windows 7, and I'll be able to help you out. Ok I'm new here but I just spent the last 8 hours with this exact same issue. That is, the video backgrounds that I insert into the game are not working. I just get a black screen. After these several hours I finally found the answer and got it to work perfectly!!! I think this should work on Windows 7 also. This is how I got mine to work: 1) Make sure you have downloaded and installed Phase Shift. The version I used was 1.27 2) Make sure you download and install the (2) codec packs: CCCP and K-Lite Codec Pack Mega Version **Although I got to this step the background videos were still not working in Phase Shift 1.27. So after researching a bit I came to the conclusion that the reason they weren't working was because the video file (needs to be a .avi) had an audio track encoded in it. You can check by going right-click on file > properties > details. So my goal was to acquire a proper video file without an audio track. Continuing on...** 3) Find the video you want on Youtube. Then use www.saveting.com to download it. This specific website will allow you to download it without audio. In my case I downloaded a 720p, MP4 file with no audio. 4) Once your file is downloaded you need to convert it to a .AVI. So go to www.onlinevideoconverter.com and convert it to a .avi 5) Once completed you can insert the file into Phase Shift\data\backgrounds\video folder wherever you Phase Shift directory exists. I really really hope this helps you because it was a pain but I'm so happy it worked in the end.

I really really hope this helps you because it was a pain but I'm so happy it worked in the end. Seems a bit roundabout way to reach the same conclusion that I do, with one program. I just use Handbrake, which is free, and convert it to MP4. With the option of no audio. However, I have never seen audio in the video cause any issues. Granted, I have to rename the file, but that's nothing, compared to having to upload and download that video several times. As long as it will play as an AVI, or at least with that file extension, you should be good to go.
