A recent post on the fof forums shows that the devs of Frets on fire are working on rebuilding the core of FOF in C++. Looks like phase shift has competition.

That post is about 5 months old, and no visible work has been performed on it. If they haven't dropped the project, they are working on it in secret. Otherwise FoF remains dead in the water. On a more positive note, the FoFiX project has had a couple dozen commits this year, and NewCreature mentioned he's working on an open source rhythm game, with details due in the near future.
