Hello, I haven't been around in a while, but I was wondering if there was a preferred method (Slider sections vs. Trill sections) for charting trills for Phase Shift, considering that they are from different games.

Sliders are closer to being tappable sections than trills. Trills are meant to be played like a trill on a real instrument: Play a fret, and while holding that fret, hammer on and pull off a higher fret button repeatedly.

What would you say about sections that could be interpreted as either (e.g. Surfing with the Alien)?

As far as I know, "trills" mode is less accurate : You need to hit at least prompted notes, but you can also hit faster, it should fit. This is to try, I never played with this tag in a song, but this might be the most probable thing.

What would you say about sections that could be interpreted as either (e.g. Surfing with the Alien)? If it's not alternating between two notes, I'd initially guess it's tapping.

Experienced musician here.
Trills are specifically a passage where you quickly alternate between two notes. This is common to all tuned/pitched instruments (meaning everything that isn't percussion in the vein of snares, toms, cymbals and bass drums, and even then some cymbals are tuned - refer to crotales). Guitar, bass, woodwinds, brass, struck idiophones... all those have the same common names for trills.
The thing about trills on real instruments is it doesn't matter if you hit a specific rhythm at all perfectly - just alternate between those two notes as fast as possible. A related technique for wind instruments is the shake, which the player lip slurs between two notes as fast as they can (mostly only brass instruments can do this, though some good saxophone players can bend pitches that fast).
Meanwhile, the slider sections were pretty much specifically for fast guitar solo-ish type passages. Not really a real component or technique on any instrument, unless you count slide guitar (which is obviously not what it's being used for).
For charting trills, use the trills. It's truer to life.
