There are some threads on the official Rock Band forum where somebody has written a computer program to interface their guitar with the MIDI pro adapter by simulating the MIDI commands sent by the Squier. This doesn't allow you the game to know your fretting position, so the chord shape thing will not work. It also is limited to the accuracy of your tuning and equipment. Worst of all is you have to have a MIDI pickup installed on your guitar, and a pitch to MIDI converter, meaning this solution requires several hundred dollars worth of equipment. You may want to consider the YouRockGuitar (which I hear is going to have a new version released in the near future) or settling for the Squier guitar in order to receive full functionality.

www.yourockguitar.com/It's a MIDI style guitar, much more capable than the Mustang. The manufacturer of this product released a firmware update that allowed it to mimick the Squier guitar's MIDI commands. Supposedly one of the recent firmware updates has a mistake where it identifies as the Mustang (so you only get a 17 fret version chart), but they should be able to fix it.

There are real guitars that are cheaper than $100, but that doesn't make them good. There are also guitars that costs thousands of dollars.

for the record... if you get a guitar for less than a $100... its garbage, heck, anything less than 300 is pretty much garbage.

They mentioned that they are going to release a patch to allow bass guitar, but I suppose it remains to be seen how long it takes for them to do so.
