Even though im working on my own rhythm game in c++ I'd probably still contribute some fixes if phase shift was opened up in some capacity.
Let's say he is worried about online hacking, then strip out the online code or if you don't have time get someone else to do these things for you. You could give someone access to the code to start pulling out stuff that isn't wanted to be published for a phase shift open source edition.
Though if we wanted releases with online there would need to be a mechanism to add online back in on top of the open source changes. This would likely need a license that doesn't require all derivatives to be open sourced, or if going the gpl route a cla would be required so that contributed changes can be relicensed periodically for the new release.
GitHub would be preferable maybe an organization with public and private repos with the open source and closed versions of the game.
But again that stuff would only be needed if parts of the game are to remain closed.

I'm afraid David would never open up the game simply due to the fact that the game is... well.... His creation. People sometime get a little defensive over the things they make. btw funny you should mention C++ game creation I'm learning that exact same thing at my College. we have a state-of-the-art studio and everything, even a sound booth but I digress. i'm curious how far are you into the games development?

I've been learning on my own for a number of years. But this is basically all my rhythm game does atm, you can't actually play it yet. Though im working on that.
It's using c++17 and opengl 3.3
